EDN Glossary – Terms and Meanings for Export Declaration Numbers

One of the most daunting things about exporting and lodging an Export Declaration Number is the seemingly endless number of special terms and phrases used. But it’s simpler than you think. Here we break down some of the most commonly used terms.

  • AHECC (Australian Harmonised Export Commodity Classification) Code: A statistical classification for the commodity being exported, obtainable from Customs and Border Protection.
  • Assay Details: A chemical test determining the content of a particular element, consisting of the assay element code, concentration, and concentration units.
  • Branch ID: The identifier for the client’s branch, if applicable.
  • Cargo Type: The nature of the cargo, indicated by codes such as C for Containerised, CO for Combination, N for Non-containerised, and B for Bulk.
  • Commodity Classification Code: A code assigned to goods for export classification, which may be different from the AHECC code.
  • Consignment Reference Number: A unique number assigned by the exporter to a consignment.
  • Consignment City: The city where the consignee (receiver) is located.
  • Consignment Name: The name of the overseas party receiving the goods.
  • Customable Excisable Indicator: Indicates whether goods are under Customs control (Customable) or subject to excise duty (Excisable).
  • Final Destination Country Code: The two-letter code representing the final destination country.
  • First Port of Discharge: The first overseas port where goods will be unloaded, identified by a UNLocode.
  • Flight Number: The flight number for air transport, if required.
  • FOB (Free On Board) Value: The value of the goods including all costs up to their placement on the exporting vessel/aircraft, excluding overseas freight and insurance.
  • Goods Description: A clear, plain English description of the goods being exported.
  • Goods Origin Code: Represents the primary country where the goods were manufactured, with a specific format for goods manufactured outside Australia.
  • Goods Origin Country Code: The country code of the origin country where the goods were manufactured, for goods not made in Australia.
  • Gross Weight: The total weight of the goods including external packaging but excluding the container’s weight.
  • Gross Weight Unit: The unit of measure for the gross weight.
  • ICS (Integrated Cargo System): An electronic system by Australian Customs for lodging export declarations.
  • Invoice Currency Code: The currency of the invoice.
  • Linked CRN (Consolidation Reference Number): A reference number for linking to a consolidated shipment.
  • Mode of Transport: The method of transport, such as air or sea.
  • Net Quantity: The total amount of goods being exported, excluding packaging.
  • Net Quantity Unit: The measurement unit for the net quantity, in accordance with the AHECC.
  • Permits: Authorization required by Permit Issuing Authorities (PIAs) for the export of certain goods, with PIAs notifying Customs of these permit requirements.
  • Port of Loading (UNLocode): The Australian port where goods are loaded, identified by a UN location code.
  • Sender’s Reference: A unique identifier used by the client to differentiate consignments.
  • Temporary Import Number: A unique identifier for goods that were temporarily imported into Australia and are now being re-exported.
  • Total Containers: The total number of containers in the shipment.
  • Total FOB Value: The total Free On Board value of the goods, including all costs incidental to the sale and delivery of the goods onto the exporting vessel/aircraft.
  • Total Packages: The total number of packages in the shipment.
  • Vessel ID: The identifier code for the vessel, such as the Lloyds number, if required.
  • Voyage Number: The voyage number for sea transport, if required.
  • Warehouse Establishment ID: The identifier for the warehouse where goods are stored before export.
